Hands-on reviews of the licensed platforms in our ranking — what each really costs, how much you can read free, and where each one falls short.
Toomics is one of only three platforms in our ranking where a single month buys you everything — VIP costs $8.99 a month, or $47.99 a year which works out at $4.00 a month, and it removes coins and timers across a catalogue of more than 50,000 episodes. That makes it excellent value for a heavy reader and poor value for a casual one, because the free tier is thin: one to three episodes per series and little else. The thing to know before you subscribe is the auto-renewal — it is the single most common complaint in its app-store reviews. Our score: 6.2/10.
Lezhin has the best BL catalogue in English and the highest prices in this ranking — Killing Stalking, BJ Alex and Painter of the Night are exclusives you genuinely cannot read anywhere else legally. Episodes cost roughly $0.67–0.72, so a 70-episode series lands near $45, bonus coins expire, and its iOS rating is 2.58 from 2,872 reviews — the only score below 4 in our ranking. Come for the exclusives, set a budget first. Our score: 5.0/10.
Tappytoon is the platform for readers who have been burned by machine-translated manhwa. It licenses Korean romance and fantasy officially and translates it properly — Who Made Me a Princess, The Abandoned Empress, Solo Leveling. Chapters cost about $0.29, so a typical 80-chapter series runs $22–30, and Time-Till-Free gives one free chapter every 24 hours — halved to 12 hours on the $4.99 Club membership. Our score: 7.2/10.
MangaToon is the cheapest way into this category, and you can feel where the money was saved. Coins start at 100 for $0.99 — about a cent each, the lowest rate in our ranking — Monthly VIP is $4.99, and daily check-ins, tasks and ad rewards keep non-paying readers moving. The catch is translation: much of the catalogue is Chinese manhua in stiff, machine-flavoured English, which is why it scores 4 out of 10 on our translation axis — the lowest here. Our score: 6.9/10.
Every platform in our ranking gets a full review. Still to publish: MANGA Plus, Shonen Jump, Comikey, Omoi, WEBTOON, K MANGA, Manta, Mangamo, INKR, Tapas, WebComics, BookWalker, Coolmic. In the meantime, each is covered in detail on the main ranking and in the side-by-side comparison tables.
We install each app, read until the free tier runs out, pay through at least one paywall, and record what actually happens — the coin prices, the timer intervals, the translation quality, the billing behaviour. Every review carries the same six weighted scores used across the site, and the full methodology is published on How we test. Prices come from live App Store in-app purchase listings and each platform's own pricing pages, checked on the date shown at the top of every page.
